When one or both spouses have decided the marriage has ended, they have separated. The date that this occurs is called the separation date.

Usually it means the spouses get separate residences from that point on (one spouse moves out) but in some cases they can continue to reside under the same roof for some time until new arrangements are made. In the interim, they have separate households within the same house and no longer function as a family unit.
