Do I need my Certificate of Marriage to apply for a divorce?

British Columbia Divorce > Frequently Asked Questions
In a BC divorce a certificate of marriage is required unless it is impossible to obtain. The certificate of marriage must be the original certificate of marriage or certified copy of your registration of marriage issued by Vital Statistics. A certificate of marriage issued by a church or the person who performed the wedding ceremony is not acceptable.

You can obtain your certificate of marriage or a certified copy of your registration of marriage by contacting Vital Statistics or the equivalent thereof in the province, state or country you were married in. We can also obtain your certificate of marriage for you with our Certificate of Marriage Service.
